Christmas at NEC

Well, Christmas is rapidly approaching and we want to wish you a happy Christmas from all here at Newtown Evangelical Church!

Are you ready for Christmas? What's it really all about? There's the food, there's the presents, there's the family, there's all the events taking place, but are we missing the real point of it all?

Let me tell you about a lady called Thelma Howard. She was the maid and housekeeper for Walt Disney. She had a small salary but a lovely flat in the Walt Disney mansion and she cared for the family for over forty years.

Every Christmas Walt Disney used to send her a Christmas card and inside was a certificate; she put the card on the mantlepiece and the certificate in a drawer by her bed. She didn't really know what they were all about. At the age of seventy she retired and moved into retirement home and when she was eighty, she passed away, 1993.

When they opened the drawer, they found these certificates, she died seemingly a pulper; but those certificates were shares in the Walt Disney Corporation worth over £10,000,000.00 and she'd missed the whole point.

Are you missing the real point of Christmas? It's all about a child who was born. Who was He? He's known as Emmanuel - God with us. The Creator of the universe became a little baby in Bethlehem! He didn't stop being God, He is the God baby, God man, God child. Why ever would He come? He came to give us one thing - life as it's meant to be!

Our sin messes up our lives, our neighbourhoods, our families, the whole world, but Jesus Christ - the name Jesus means Saviour - He is the one who takes away the sin of the world; and when we trust in His life, His death and resurrection, we can know - our sins forgiven, a clean slate, the knowledge of God here and now, and the certainty of Heaven to come. It's the greatest gift that could ever be! And once you have this gift, there's nothing to compare to it.

Are you missing the point of Christmas?
