“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Jesus said:
In John, chapter 10 Jesus claims to be the good shepherd: "I am the good shepherd."
When we think about modern shepherds, they round up their sheep by using sheep dogs and they go behind their sheep and they chase them and hurry them; but an eastern shepherd in Jesus' time went ahead of his sheep. He called them by name - he knew their names, they knew his voice and they followed after him. The echoes of Psalm 23 here - the Lord is my shepherd, the one who is leading me through life, so I shall lack no good thing - green pastures, still waters, providing, protecting and leading them eventually to Heaven itself. How does He get us to Heaven? Well, this Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. He says - I have come to give my life on behalf of the sheep to take them safely to Heaven. He died for our sins; He rose again from the dead to prove that it's all true.
It's so wonderful! Who is your shepherd? Who is leading you through life?
